Brass Art’s response to the particular site of Blackpool began with ideas of the souvenir copy, the uncanny feeling evoked by the renowned Illuminations tableaux, and the architecture of the pier and the fairground that strangely echo each another.
The artists recreated iconic elements of the seaside towns, whilst further developing tropes integral to their collaborative practice, drawing upon ideas of ‘the double’ as well as metamorphosis through shadow play. Half-made cellophane horses, wave-like and volatile, at other points tamed or ominous, suggest the otherworldly magic of the spinning carousel and provide a temporal meter to the shadow play. Multiple, miniature sculptures of the three artists in translucent polymer resin (created from original 3D bodyscans and 3D printing processes), direct and support the material elements of the still life itself.
