Medium Watercolour on paper. Unframed dimensions 50cm x 40cm

The watercolour drawings for The Non-existence of the Unnamed, portray the suggested encounters between the artist’s living flesh and the re-animated specimens from the Entomology collection at Manchester University Museum. Transformed into a series of theatrical masquerades, the drawings reveal the tension between the idea of the act, and the act itself, creating both intimate and terrifying results. Made as collaborative drawings, the artists are collectively engaged in their production; articulating the intimacy of Brass Art’s long-standing working relationship.

For The Non-existence of the Unnamed at the International3, Brass Art installed a single light bulb in the gallery to reveal the pinned images within the darkened space.

Two-part argon sign.
Dimensions: 128cm x 60cm x 17cm

Brass Art created an animated blue-argon ‘drawing’, based on a central hand gesture depicted in Hogarth’s allegorical etching series ‘A Harlot’s Progress’. The willful but silent ‘click’ is designed to draw attention to the disembodied gesture.

An inverted pair of lungs slowly inhale and exhale. Illuminating bronchioles and aveoli, the lungs appear as a glowing tree or a pulsing heart, and, “the artists draw us into an intriguing, closed space where the breaths of death and revival are in continual flux.” Clare Lilley, Head Curator, Yorkshire Sculpture ParkThanks to: Taylor Electronics

Neon installation, dimensions: 900cm x 100cm

The image of the crumbling tower has become an overarching motif for our age; spectacularly marking the start of this millennium with an iconic void whose repercussions stretch far into the future. The destroyed tower returns us to the ivory pagoda at Bury Museum (which long ago lost its original) and has a link with Radcliffe’s historic ruin. The line of neon text and its shadow, installed on the front of Radcliffe Metro station, form an arrow shape, following the northbound tram and hinting at an escape, but from what?Commissioned by Tony Trehy for the Text Festival, Bury. Thanks to: Taylors’ Electronics.

Blown red glass, brass fittings. 16cm x 10cm x 8cm

Molten red glass was pushed into hand moulds to create a tactile form, responding to ideas of gesture and touch. In it’s brass clasp it references an anatomical illustration; or a prized, living heart.
